![]() ![]() As the player completes missions for various gangs, members of other gangs often defend the player, while members of rival gangs find the player and open fire. Throughout the story, Tommy meets various gangster characters. Many themes are borrowed from the major films Scarface (1983) and Carlito's Way (1993), the latter for its characterization and depiction of sophisticated criminals, as well as the look from Miami Vice. The game's visuals, especially the clothing and vehicles, reflect the 1980s setting. Vice City previously appeared in the original Grand Theft Auto. ![]() The game world in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City takes place in the titular Vice City, which is heavily based on the city of Miami in 1986. Looking for those responsible, he seizes power from other criminal gangs in the city and slowly builds a criminal empire. The single-player story follows mobster Tommy Vercetti as he rises to power after being released from prison and becomes embroiled in a drug-dealing robbery. This enabled the game to have a huge cityscape that includes interactive buildings, vehicles, and other environmental features. The original release version used an optimized version of the RenderWare game engine used in GTA III. The game was released on the Sony PlayStation 2 in October 2002, Microsoft Windows in May 2003, and for the Microsoft Xbox in October 2003. Considering that for twenty bucks, you could get the GTA pack that has multiplayer and six times the amount of play time, paying ten bucks for only two hours is a hefty price.Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (also referred to as GTA Vice City, Vice City and sometimes abbreviated as GTAVC) is the fifth of the mainline games of the series. What's more, the ending of the pack feels a bit rushed and anti-climactic, introducing a foil within the last ten minutes of play that essentially fades into the background thanks to the closing cutscene. Even though you wind up gaining new outfits for Lara (like exploring the dungeon only wearing a bikini) as well as 125 extra achievement points, the price of the expansion is rather steep for what you're getting out of the gameplay. That's somewhat underwhelming, particularly when you consider that you're spending 800 points ($10) for the pack. Although the game is around a gigabyte to download, anyone that's played any Tomb Raider game in the past should be able to complete Beneath the Ashes in around two hours. Bats - why'd it have to be bats? The other serious problem is that the expansion pack is incredibly short. If you've played any Tomb Raider game before, you'll pretty much be aware of climbing the various wooden planks, ledges and other areas that you'll need to use to move through the dungeon. While it can be argued that you can avoid using this to improve the difficulty, the game isn't particularly that challenging to begin with. The inclusion of your father's diary at the very start of the expansion clearly spells out every single thing that you need to do from start to finish. This focus might seem to expand on the gameplay significantly and require more exploration, but that isn't the case. In fact, there are a couple of sections where your progress is integrally linked to your use of the grappling hook, so you'll need to focus much more on your jumps and your quick rappelling skills than anything else. This exploration actually winds up using the grappling hook much more than was ever used in Tomb Raider Underworld, as you'll use it to scale walls, leap from one area to another and interact with your environment to solve different puzzles. While you will have to use your guns to take out small and large spiders, bats and eventually a number of thralls, the main objective is exploring and solving the mystery set forth by Lara's father as he attempted to hide the magical artifact. Unlike other titles, Beneath the Ashes doesn't really place a large focus on combat. The adventure in the depths of the Manor will take Lara through a couple of caverns as well as a sprawling ancient dungeon, solving a few minor puzzles and eliminating enemies as she goes along. When they want to keep you out, they really want to keep you out. With only his directions to the relic's resting place (which just happens to lie further underneath Croft Manor), Lara sets off to retrieve the mystical object. This would provide its owner with incredible power, but unfortunately for Lara, the word was mysteriously left out of her father's notes. This relic not only grants its possessor the ability to create thralls (the undead creatures within Underworld), but also control them with a single word. While searching through his records and papers, Lara comes across a file that speaks of an artifact with incredible power. Beneath the Ashes takes Lara back to her father's secret study underneath the ruins of her manor. ![]()
